Base upgrades in Steal Anime Eggs
The description upgrades "your treadmill and base" in the same breath. They are two different problems and it helps to keep them apart.
Your base is where stolen eggs are hatched and where anime stand to earn. Upgrading it raises what the plot can hold; it is a separate track from the treadmill.
Two tracks, two problems
The treadmill fixes Speed. The base fixes space. If you are short on Speed you get caught on the way home; if you are short on base you hatch anime with nowhere to put them. Buying the wrong one feels like the game has stopped working, when in fact you have upgraded the solution to a problem you did not have.

What the base holds
Your base is the plot you return to on every run: it is where the egg lands, where the hatch happens, and where placed anime stand while they produce money. Its capacity is therefore a hard ceiling on your income, because income equals placed anime.
When to buy a base upgrade
Buy base space when a hatch has nowhere to go, or when you have a queue of anime waiting to be placed. Buy treadmill time when you are failing routes. Those are the two signals, and they almost never point at the same purchase.
Defending the base
Because the game lets you steal eggs from other players, the base is also the thing you are defending. It is worth understanding your own layout from a raider's point of view — the protection page walks through that.
Base size and the six-player server
Servers cap at six players, so the number of plots in your world is small. That makes other players' bases both a target and a threat in a way that would not be true in a large server.
FAQ
Does the base have to be upgraded to hatch eggs?
You can hatch from the start. Upgrading the base is about how much you can keep placed and producing.
Can other players enter my base?
The game's loop explicitly includes stealing eggs from other players, so treat your plot as reachable by design.
Which upgrade comes first, base or treadmill?
Treadmill. Without Speed you cannot reliably bring eggs home to fill the space.
